How do you teach your children about cultural diversity? A Freshly Picked/Mixed Up Clothing Collaboration

As a mom and an entrepreneur, I know how hard it is to start a business. Then once your business is up and running, it is even more difficult to balance your business and family. As you know, I have four children ranging from 5 to 21 years old and each one has an average of 2 activities each so I will be the first to say that I tow the line each day between being a “good mom/wife” or a “good businesswoman” (whatever “good” means). Coupled with the mommy/wife/businesswoman guilt, I’m screwed!

 

There are days when I feel like I can get it all done and everything is running smoothly. Orders are coming in, hubby is off and helping me run kids to activities and we can eat dinner together. Aye, then there are the other days where I feel like I failed: I wasn’t fully “present” in my kids’ daily activities because I’m focused on my business, I’m updating social media sites, I’m calling vendors and putting out production fires. It is on those days when you have to re-group and go back to your mission. What am I doing and why am I doing it. Focus on your passion.

I'm mixed Latina and black, born in Puerto Rico, raised in Hawaii before coming to California. My husband is Korean and my children are wonderful mixes of us both. So my passion is CULTURE! Sharing and learning about other cultures.  I'm teaching my children Spanish and my husband is teaching them Korean, we read multicultural children's book, we go to museums and cultural events around the city to teach, we try new foods...all to raise them to be "mini global citizens".
My passion is making beautiful children's apparel to be used as a vehicle to teach others about different cultures. Celebrating diversity is our mission.

I have been very fortunate to do what I love and although it isn't always easy, with hard work and dedication, I know I can continue on this path. I am not alone as a mom and an entrepreneur. I surround myself with other moms who are businesswomen who are trying their best to balance it all. Together we share our ups and downs; our wins and losses. But together we find the support to move forward. I'd like to share one fellow mompreneur's story. The story of Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked Moccasins.

For most of us starting out, money is tight. It wasn't any different for Susan, who got resourceful. Her brother owns a window installation business and in the summer of 2009 she convinced him to let her keep the old windows that he was removing from the houses. She spent a whole summer banging the glass out of the windows because they were encased in aluminum frames. At the end of the summer she took the aluminum window frames to the scrap yard and recycled them to get money. She made $200 dollars and with that literal sweat equity, she started her business. 

 

After years of hard work she landed on ABC's Shark Tank and struck a deal Daymond John of FUBU. Congratulations Susan!!

I asked a friend who has a little one just learning to walk to put them on for me. Her little's toes and feet had the ability to flex and keep a natural arch which she says provides for good walking.
