LA Zoo: Giraffe feeding at ZooLAbration

After being rained out the first time,The Mixed Up Blog's special events contributor, Aurora and her family were excited to check out the Los Angeles Zoo's new interactive Giraffe Feedings which officially debuted in February as part of the Zoo's yearlong 50th anniversary "ZooLAbration."              What's it like to stand face-to-face with a giraffe? Check out Aurora's son, Roarke, doing just that. Mom said Roarke thought it looked like a scene out of the movie Jurassic Park and he loved it. Roarke learned that "standing 16-20 feet tall, giraffes have always been a favorite as they tower over our...

Ford- NAIAS Detroit Auto Show '17

With my grandmother's health declining, I was unable to attend this year's NAIAS in Detroit which is one of the best ways to start the new year. Never wanting to miss a great opportunity, I sent my husband in my stead to join the thousands of media, auto and tech industry folks.  Day 1 of the show had him face to face with Ford executives, designers and he was like a kid in a candy store. He would text me throughout the day as he explored Cobo with a huge grin on his face. Here's his blog post: Innovation and...

Curvy Couture

As an entrepreneur, blogger, and busy mom of four, I'm constantly on the go and often times meeting other's needs supersedes my own personal needs. One of the areas that has needed some love and attention is my lingerie drawer. Recently I've lost a few inches on my waistline and evidently my bra size had also changed.   For years I've been wearing Victoria's Secret and enjoyed the in-store experience (when they had my size in stock). Leaving the VS store with their signature pink and black bag containing a new bra and candy flavored lipgloss always felt like a decadent...

MultiCulti Corner Holiday Party at Fresh Brothers

The holidays are always a special time of year. It's a time to get together with your family and friends. My MultiCulti Corner family got together at Fresh Brothers in Santa Monica for our holiday party. MultiCulti Corner is a fun group that we have that goes around Los Angeles learning about others. We have traveled to San Fernando to Magaly's Tamales to learn about the Latin culture of tamale-making, visited Chinatown and tried dim sum for the first time. We have also supported and produced an event for actor/author, Taye Diggs, at Kidsville Brentwood.  The MultiCulti littles and their...

L.A Zoo Reindeer Romp 2016

What a wonderful day spent covering the Reindeer Romp at the L.A. Zoo. Who knew it is the only place to view live reindeer in Los Angeles? We were able to visit with a reindeer family, including their two babies, in their Reindeer Village home.   There were so many activities that the kids were pulling us in every direction. We started with holiday crafts followed by ice-carving demonstrations and a Swazzle Holiday Extravaganza puppet show.   After lunch and feeling like we should just chill for a bit, we took in seasonal music and entertainment by the Beverly Belles. ...

L.A Zoo Lights 2016

The L.A Zoo Lights lived up to it's promise of more lights and more nights of dazzling magic to kick off their "ZooLAbration" of Zoo's 50th anniversary. It's no wonder why L.A. Zoo Lights were awarded USA Today's 2015 "10 Best Zoo Lights" honor as it tops everyone's "holiday must" destination list. Covering this event for media day and meeting up with friends made the evening so much better. The kids enjoyed the animal characters that were brought to "life," using LED lights, an animal shadow puppet installation complete with interactive photo-op and the new waterfall feature. The kids oohed...

Multicultural Holiday Gift Guide 2016

As a multicultural mama of 4, this year has been a difficult one. From the hate-filled rhetoric during the Presidential election to conversations surrounding Black Lives Matters vs. Blue Lives Matter, my children, like many others were left with many questions. As parents, it's difficult to shelter our children from hearing negative conversations. Some of the things my littles heard came straight from the playground, during play dates, or in the supermarket checkout line. “Apa, did you know so and so’s dad said we have to go back to Korea”, one little would say. “Mama, so and so said we...

WinterFestOC 2016

My family and I love this time of year. We get to enjoy celebrating different holidays and cultural traditions.  Being a multicultural family (Black, Mexican and Korean) we also get to create our own unique mash-up ones. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Three Kings Day, December is a magical month to recognize diverse cultural celebrations and traditions. It is also a fun month of teachable moments that my family really gets into. Wintertime in Southern California is unlike many other places. Our temps get low for Cali standards and, contrary to popular belief, we do have snow…you...

Shop Small Business Saturday

We had such a great pop-up shop at Miracle Mile Toy Store celebrating Shop Small Business Saturday. We met other small businesses like The Piggy Box which helps teach kids about money.  We also had great support by larger businesses that support our small business. Fresh Brothers is a family-owned business that does a great deal for the community and schools. Plus their pizza is ah-mazing! What a great day! The kids were surprised to have a special book reading by the voice of Disney's Doc McStuffins. Laya DeLeon Hayes was so sweet and the kids adored her as she...

Boo at the LA Zoo

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with the L.A Zoo for their annual BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO event. However, all opinions expressed are my own. This is our second year attending this event and the littles couldn't wait to check it out again this year. This annual event, sponsored by 99 Cents Only Stores, is back to fill every day in October with Fang-tastic activities that my kids loved. Check out our fun-filled day at the Zoo. We were able to get up close and personal with some of the Zoo’s scaly, slithery creatures at “Animals and You” encounters, with...

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with Fox Home Entertainment. However, all opinions expressed are my own. My family and I are fans of the Ice Age franchise so when we were invited to attend the Ice Age Collision Course DVD release media event at Discovery Cube in Santa Ana, we jumped at the opportunity.   I brought my husband and two of our four children to the event which started with a breakfast with Scrat. Scrat is the hilarious squirrel who is obsessed with acorns that constantly elude him. The kids loved meeting him and taking pictures with...

Women and Finance

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with Prudential and DiMe Media. However, all opinions expressed are my own. Looking at me on social media, you would never know how difficult my life is. We all tend to put our best foot forward, right? We feel that if we present the "realness" folks may not like what they see and if you're in the public eye, perhaps sponsors will shy away from your brand. At the many networking events I attend, they stress presenting your authentic self. I have to admit, I am afraid to present this side of me...
